HIV PrEP Free Medication

HIV PrEP refers to a combination pill containing tenofovir DF
and emtricitabine. When taken correctly in combination
with other HIV prevention measures, it dramatically
reduces the risk of HIV sexual transmission is now available on prescription in Ireland.

Some patients may take daily PrEP and some patients may take event based PrEP –

This will consist of an STI screen, renal profile, urinalysis and PrEP education.

All prescriptions are for 3 months and a consultation is obligatory before every 3 month prescription.

Is Pep the same as PrEP?

No – PrEP, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is taken daily before exposure to HIV.

PEP, short for POST-exposure prophylaxis, is an emergency option to reduce the risk of contracting HIV after a possible exposure. This medication must be taken within 72 hours of exposure to HIV and then continued daily for 28 days. PEP medication is available at all Hospital Emergency Departments.
